The Science of Aeroponics

Aeroponics is categorized into two distinct systems:

  • Low-Pressure Aeroponics (LPA): Operating at pressures up to 50 psi, LPA systems mist plant roots without specific control over droplet size.

  • High-Pressure Aeroponics (HPA): Functioning at pressures above 80 psi, HPA systems allow for precise control over droplet size, ranging from 5-50 microns, optimizing nutrient uptake and root zone oxygenation.

This assessment follows a court ruling that upheld the USDA’s policy allowing these soil-less farming operations to be certified as organic. However, this decision remains contentious within the organic farming community. Critics, including the Center for Food Safety and various organic farmers, argue that the lack of soil fertility building in these systems contradicts the fundamental principles of traditional organic farming, which emphasize soil health. Despite this debate, as of now, soilless cultivation systems are officially recognized as organic by the USDA.
